“Making art is smart.” -Gabrielle, age 11

In 2008, Art League Houston introduced ArtBound!, a project funded by Target, which has expanded into residencies in Houston ISD schools and workshops for families. Art League Houston appreciates the sponsorship it has received from Target, which continues its longstanding commitment to give more than $3 million every week to support education, the arts, social services, and volunteerism in communities throughout the country.
ArtBound! in Houston ISD Schools:
In the fall of 2009, Art League Houston extended its ArtBound! program into Houston ISD schools. During the 2009-10 academic year, Art League Houston conducted five major residencies at Cage Elementary, Julius Dodson Elementary, and Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy. By the end of the 2010-11 academic year, ALH will have implemented arts residencies at Cage, Dodson, Field, Love, Pleasantville (all HISD elementary schools) and Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy.
The ArtBound! school residencies, held during the school day, are curriculum-based. This approach has classroom teachers and Art League Houston teaching artists working together to connect concepts and skills in school curriculum to concepts and skills in the visual arts. The results are amazing!
The staying power of an ArtBound! in-school residency is substantial for both students and classroom teachers. Students study with a professional teaching artist and experience a sense of accomplishment from creating original art. They also learn how art is connected to other subject areas. Classroom teachers participate in the planning of the residency, and they create art with their students. They also learn to develop strategies for incorporating visual arts activities and content into writing, math, science and other subjects.
ArtBound! Workshops for Families at Art League Houston:
It is a commonly held belief that learning in the home is the single most important factor in a child’s education. Art League Houston believes that arts organizations should provide workshop experiences for families to enhance learning in the home. Its ArtBound! workshops, held at Art League Houston, are designed to promote family literacy. ArtBound! workshops most often link visual arts to reading, writing, math, and science.
With instruction by professional artists, families gather at Art League to create art inspired by an Art League Houston exhibition. ArtBound! workshops free, fun, and designed to be inexpensively replicated so families can more easily repeat the workshop activities at home.
