Ever wonder what to do with all of those leftover soda cans? In this class we will be making our very own backyard mini metal foundries. We will all practice using our foundries by first making our own aluminum ingots for quick and easy melting. Students will either carve and sculpt original foam objects to cast in aluminum. Students will learn how to prepare their foam objects to cast in the burnout sand casting method, how to safely pour molten metal, and how to polish their final projects to a shine. This class is designed for beginners, so everyone is welcome. For safety reasons while casting all students must wear leather or closed-toe shoes. Please note: enrollment for this course is limited to 8 students

Students will be encouraged to explore the emotions which can be expressed in gesture by casting body parts such as hands, feet, or the face. To capture fine details like finger prints and wrinkles, students will be using alginate, a non-toxic rubber like substance deriving from algae. From these casts students will be making silicone molds and will have the opportunity to create multiple copies of the single body part in either plaster and/or wax. These materials offer a wide range of surface coloration and design which will also be demonstrated. This class is designed as a beginner class but all levels are welcome.

Jewelry Intensive: Cuttlefish Bone Casting and Broom Casting (S-8)

2-Day Workshop
$195 members / $230 public

This is an introduction to the process of cuttlefishbone casting, a method of gravity casting. Cuttlefishbone is an organic material that is soft enough to carve a negative mold. Once the mold is cut and both sides are marked for alignment, a sprue channel is cut into the material and molten sterling is poured into the negative area. The texture of the soft bone surface is very organic. Once the casting is complete it can be cut, filed, and soldered to create a distinctive piece of jewelry. This class requires some advanced jewelry skills such as sawing, filing and torch skills. Students will be casting in sterling silver and will need 2-3 ounces of sterling scrap or sterling casting grain. Sterling scrap will be available for purchase from the instructor in ½ ounce packets. Please note: For safety reasons while casting all students must wear leather or closed-toe shoes.
