Debtfair is an ongoing artistic campaign to expose the relationship between economic inequality in the art market and artists’ growing debt burdens, exploring the idea that all spaces function with a layer of extraction just below the surface. Occupy Museums and Art League Houston (ALH) invite Texas-based artists to reframe and exhibit their artwork within the first-realization of Debtfair to illustrate the economic realities for Texas artists and their relationships to the cultural economy at large.
Original artwork will be collected through a non-juried open call in which artists will be asked to submit a work of equal relative value to their monthly debt payment. Artworks will be organized in collective groupings (“bundles”) and exhibited inside the walls, between the studs of the main gallery of ALH. Bundles will be grouped based on information collected from an online questionnaire. This collective exhibition format will present artworks in shared rather than individual terms, illustrating the total debts amongst participating artists and identifying the institutions in which these debts are rooted (banks, schools, cultural programs, life expenses, etc.).
Artwork in Debtfair will be for sale, but not in the normal way that art is sold. Bundled artworks will be available for sale with a starting value of the totaled monthly debt payments of included artists. This number will then be given the same interest rates and financial metrics applied to the debts of artists involved increasing bundle price at the same rate of artists’ debts. Any sales will be distributed to artists at their declared value, further profits evenly split and all payments made directly to the artists’ lending institution for a minimum of one month’s debt relief.
Being in debt often elicits feelings of shame and isolation. If we highlight the hidden layers of artists’ lives, we hope to work together towards economic visualization and structural change. We encourage you to participate and contact us with questions at debtfair@gmail.com.

ELIGIBILITY
All Texas area artists are eligible to submit ONE original artwork for this nonjuried exhibition. There is no fee to apply. Exhibited artwork must be on a rigid support and no larger than 22 (w) x 24 (h) x 5 (d) inches. For nonobject based practices, please contact us for inclusion options.
REQUIREMENTS / PAYMENT
In order to participate, artists are required to create a profile on the Debtfair website (named or anonymously) and answer questions regarding economic conditions by Oct. 30, 2015. Exhibiting artists may also participate anonymously. Please contact us for details. Participating artists will receiving a one-year League of Artists Membership and are invited to a special dinner at ALH to meet other artists and discuss questions raised by the project (date to be announced). Debtfair es una campaña artística en curso que busca exponer la relación entre la desigualdad económica en el mercado del arte y las crecientes deudas de los artistas, explorando la idea de que todos los espacios funcionan con una capa de extracción justo debajo de la superficie. Occupy Museums y Art League Houston (ALH) invitan a artistas que residan en Texas a replantear y exhibir sus obras de arte en la primera versión de Debtfair para ilustrar la realidad económica de los artistas en Texas y su relación con la cultura económica.
Se reunirán obras de arte originales a través de una convocatoria abierta en la que se les pedirá a los artistas participar con una obra de valor relativo igual al pago mensual de su deuda. Las obras se agruparán en bultos colectivos ("paquetes") y serán exhibidos dentro de las paredes, entre los postes de la galería principal de ALH. Los bultos se agruparán de acuerdo a la información obtenida de un cuestionario en línea. Este formato de muestra colectiva pretende exhibir las obras de arte en términos colectivos en lugar de individuales, ilustrando la deuda total entre los artistas participantes e identificando las instituciones en las que sus deudas están concentradas (bancos, universidades, programas culturales, gastos de vida, etc.).
Las obras en Debtfair estarán a la venta, pero no de la forma habitual en que el arte se vende. Los bultos de obras estarán disponibles para la venta con un valor inicial igual a la suma de los pagos mensuales de la deuda de los artistas incluidos en el bulto. A esa cantidad se le aplicarán las mismas tasas de interés y los indicadores financieros aplicados a las deudas de los artistas involucrados, de manera que el precio del bulto aumentará en la misma proporción que las deudas de los artistas. Las ganancias de las ventas serán distribuidas a los artistas según el valor declarado de cada pieza, mientras que cualquier ganancia adicional será dividida equitativamente. Todos los pagos se harán directamente al banco de los artistas, cubriendo como mínimo el pago de su deuda de un mes.
