Summer Intensive Mural Project

Established in 2019, the Summer Intensive Mural Project takes place in conjunction with the Summer Intensive For Teens Program at Art League Houston (ALH). Over the course of the Summer Intensive Program each year, the student cohort works closely with a Houston-based muralist and ALH staff to create a collaborative piece of public art in a high-visibility location.

Each year, the Summer Intensive students work together to design a mural that reflects their collective perspective. Past murals have investigated themes including local histories, identity, racial injustice, public health, mental health, and inclusivity.

2020 ALH summer Intensive Virtual Mural Project

The 2020 Summer Intensive was held virtually in response to the pandemic. Students researched, designed, and collaborated on the 2020 Mural Project via zoom. Students met regularly with muralist, Armando Castelan, throughout the design process. The 2020 Summer Intensive Mural Project explores the cohort’s interpretation of a tumultuous time in the country and includes imagery about the protests following George Floyd’s murder and heightened racial tensions as well as the shared stressors of the pandemic. Students chose to incorporate these references into a positive message about resilience and their collective hope for a better future.

The mural was designed in 2020, but was not executed until the spring of 2021 due to concerns around the pandemic. The 2020 mural marks the Summer Intensive Mural Project permanently moving to the Art League Houston Campus
