Clay Character Vessels
Hand-building Clay workshop with local ceramist and educator Sarah Stanhope
Friday, October 17th from 6 pm - 8 pm
In this session, participants will learn foundational hand-building techniques inspired by contemporary Mexican ceramics and traditional Oaxacan face pottery using air dry clay. The intended outcome is to introduce handbuilt ceramics in a variety of classroom settings regardless of kiln availability. This lesson will cover basic handbuilding techniques, surface decoration using texture, and can be adapted to suit a variety of materials and classroom resources.
Sarah Stanhope is an academic librarian specializing in makerspace programming and workshops. She holds a BFA in Studio Art and an MS in Art Education from The University of Tennessee. Sarah has worked as a ceramic studio assistant at the POTCLUB studio in Eado where she gained experience in ceramics instruction, studio logistics, kiln work, and glaze chemistry. Sarah’s artistic practice includes hand built and wheel-thrown pottery that she sells locally through her brand Picnic Ants Press. As a former K-12 Art Teacher, Sarah is experienced in finding creative and innovative ways to adapt fine art processes for the classroom environment that are practical and budget-friendly.
