“Linocut”, also known as linoleum block printing, has a rich history over the last century and remains an extremely versatile and popular technique for artists today. This course will introduce students to the fundamentals, including different design strategies in black and white, how to transfer and safely and effectively carve the block using different tools, and how to print an edition using Art League’s motorized printing press, and by hand. The course will also include demos on “jigsaw printing” and monoprinting methods. No prior printmaking experience is necessary. Oil-based printing inks, initial linoleum blocks, and newsprint will be provided for the class. Advanced students are encouraged to pursue more ambitious projects using the press.
