Students will learn the foundations of metalpoint, with a focus on silverpoint, while gaining practical experience with the tools, materials, and techniques used to create these distinctive drawings. Through demonstrations and guided exercises, participants will explore mark-making, line quality, and the unique characteristics of drawing with metal on prepared surfaces. Because silverpoint is a slow, deliberate drawing process, students will develop an appreciation for careful observation, intentional mark-making, and the relationship between material and surface.
A major focus of the workshop will be understanding the importance of the drawing surface. Participants will compare different paper types, learn how various grounds affect the quality of the mark, and prepare their own drawing supports using both traditional and contemporary methods. By the end of the workshop, students will have a solid understanding of the foundations of silverpoint, the confidence to prepare their own surfaces, and the skills to continue exploring this unique drawing medium in their own practice.
