In this course we will take multiple approaches to exploring watercolor. Everything from technical studies, plein-air painting, experimental and abstract methods as well as observational painting are included in the course. This course is intended to help make watercolor more approachable and less intimidating. Students are recommended to have some drawing experience but painting experience is not a requirement.

In this 5 week class, students will explore a series of meditative and gentle body movements in combination with ink based drawings to get further understanding of how mind and body connect within the context of a studio practice.  This class begins with a guided meditation and relaxation exercise through mind and body. Through the exploration of body movement, stretches and poses along with the use of Sumi-e ink techniques, students will capture the fluidity found in mind, body and nature. By working through joint painting and movement exercises students will gain a better understanding of the critical role involving body movement and mark making. Additionally, students will learn traditional and innovative ink painting methods such as ink grinding, brush movement, brushstroke technique, in conjunction with historical, philosophical and theoretical reference pertaining to animals selected by students. Suitable for all levels of ink painters.

This workshop introduces the basics of multi-layer screenprinting using the photo emulsion stencil process. With hand-drawn imagery & collage techniques, participants will create a 2-layer, color prints on paper. We will focus on gaining a sense of image building through texture, line and color transparency, in order to create an edition of prints. Participants should come with a collection of image ideas, mark making materials, and a readiness to experiment. This workshop emphasizes techniques for creating posters or fine art prints. This workshop will provide a basic understanding of the screenprinting process using photo-emulsion process. Students will learn everything they need to know to screenprinting in their own home/studio. We will learn step by step in stencil preparation, paper-printing options and color techniques. Screenprinting products generously sponsored by Speedball Art Products®.

In this painting adventure students will unleash their creativity to capture fascinating creatures in oils, acrylics, or gouache. Students will choose their own dynamic photograph as a painting reference for a final work of art. We will look at a variety of approaches to painting a lively and expressive animal portrait. Be prepared to experiment and play while finishing at least one unique work of art. Students will receive weekly feedback on their process, individual guidance, and recommendations based on their weekly progress. Please note: Basic painting and drawing experience is highly recommended.

Knowing your subject well will help you create that spark that makes your pet your own. We will create an 8x10 pet portrait using Oil Paint in the Alla prima method (also known as “direct painting” or “wet on wet” Oil Painting). Using this technique, we will complete entire paintings in one session without waiting for the paint layers to dry completely. We will work on establishing values and mixing colors. Using these techniques will help us discover the energy and life of your favorite furry subject.

Students are recommended to have some drawing and painting experience but not required.
